Theon Cross is a musician, bandleader and composer, increasingly making a name for his distinctive approach to playing the tuba. He was taught by much-esteemed tuba player Oren Marshall, and took over from Marshall in Shabaka Hutchings’ Sons of Kemet.
The Caribbean-inspired, diasporically-minded group, famed for their viscerally-direct live performances, share influences with Cross’ own trio. With band members Nubya Garcia and Moses Boyd, Caribbean references are intertwined with a love for New Orleans Second Line.
The ‘Aspirations’ EP by Theon Cross Trio was released in 2015, and was the first introduction to his own band. That same year, Sons of Kemet released ‘Lest We Forget What We Came Here To Do’. They’ve also just announced their new album, ‘Your Queen Is A Reptile’ in March 2018.
